Blooming in the Weeds

Nature is full of reminders. Like these little flowers growing in the midst of weeds. Bulbs and seeds don’t sit dormant waiting for someone to put them on display in just the right spot. They don’t complain that no one appreciates them. They don’t give up just because they have to change.

They just grow. Whatever it is, tiny little flower or large showy lily, dandelion or nasturtium, they just become. Shoots of green push towards the light against mud and rocks and roots. They don’t worry along the way about how it’s all going to turn out, whether they’ll look a certain way or have a special scent. They don’t look at each other and judge their efforts accordingly.

They just are. And that’s all we’re supposed to be–what we are. Not what someone else is–not someone more talented, or more energetic, or more put together. It’s more than just growing where you’re planted, although that’s important too. You have to quit hoping you’ll be a orchid when you’re meant to be a marigold. To give up aspirations of a rose’s fragrance when you’re a corpse flower. It’s pretty simple really. Much simpler than nurturing a neurosis. Just be.

Breathe, Exhale, Breathe, Exhale

Too much left brained activity today! Don’t get me wrong. Computers have many benefits. But sometimes….argh!!!! I lost some pictures out of Picasa, so my profile picture had to be replaced with one that I do not like at all. (I know someone will be very pleased about that glitch. You know who you are.) Guess that will prompt me to take a better one, now won’t it? Despite the project taking more time than I thought it should, it was a productive day.

Now I can get back to Elizabeth Kostova’s new novel, The Swan Thieves, which I started last night. This is definitely a tale of obsession. Having just finished The Lost City of Z by David Grann, I guess I’m keeping to the theme. If you like reading tales of adventure gone wrong, the story of Percy Harrison Fawcett will be right up your alley. If you can’t stand the details of bugs and malaria and oozing flesh, do not crack the cover. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Spring into Action

Have a Happy Friday, everyone! Make time for creative play and think Spring! Whatever it takes to get the creative sap rising, now is the time to start the process. I believe there are many beautiful things waiting to take shape. Waiting on us to do the work and make it happen.

Who? Me?!

Jenny at Sew Pretty Dresses gave me this Beautiful Blogger award! Thank you, Jenny! Now that I have the award I am supposed to do the following:

1) Thank the person who gave me the award,
[Okay, well...most of you probably know that I am not good at these kinds of things and have a tendency to ignore them altogether. However, in light of the spirit of friendship and camaraderie that marks the award and the crafty online community, I will play along. Sort of.]

Thank you, Jenny! When I started blogging I was nervous about the people that might be out there. What if a bunch of crazy people found my blog? I’ve discovered that there wasn’t much to be worried about. (So far the crazy people remain hidden.) Instead, I have found new friends. People full of enthusiasm and life who want to be creative and share positive energy and ideas. People like Jenny.

2) Pass the award on to seven bloggers whom I have recently found and whom I think are fantastic,

Here’s where I fail. There are so many wonderful blogs out there. I don’t want to have to pick and choose. (And I don’t want to irritate anyone.) So, instead I’ll point you right back to Jenny and her productive corner of the blogosphere.

3) Contact said blogs and tell them they won,

NA

4) State seven things about me.

Item one: I have two vices–coffee and dark chocolate
Item two: I will never have enough time to read all the books I want to read
Item three: I’m a cat person first, dog person second
Item four: I have 26 nieces and nephews and 11 grand-nieces and -nephews
Item five: I grew up without a TV
Item six: I love the weather on the coast but don’t go to the beach (I know, I know)
Item seven: I’m a klutz

There! I did it. Kinda. I think I’ll survive. This is so out of character for me. But seriously, I am grateful to Jenny for her enthusiasm and for following the blog. Do visit Jenny and see all the cute things she’s made for her daughter.

Big Game Crafting

Look what I got yesterday! Two different sources and seemingly unrelated. But I think some of these buttons will end up on this fun and adventurous fabric.

I’ve been hunting online for this Sis Boom Zebra print for what seems like forever. Imagine my excitement on finding it. Not quite delirious. But close. Unfortunately, the brown is unavailable. Sigh………….

It’s such a great dash of the unexpected. I can’t wait to see what happens. Better get it in the washing machine…right this minute!

Ready?

Interesting book–check. Water bottle–check. Snacks–check. Towel to sit on–check. Sweatshirt, just in case–check. Colorful fun carrying case for all those necessities–check.

This is made with “vintage” Sassaman fabric on the outside and solid broadcloth for the lining. Layered between all the pieces, including the strap, is fusible fleece. There are two pockets sewn into the sides/strap for cell phone, camera, whatever.

Using denim or duck lining would add extra durability and stiffness. Using patchwork for the front and back would look great too. A very customizable bag. Totally easy. Totally cute.

Getting Ruffled

It is shaping up to be a gorgeous day. A little cool for me but the sun is out and the birds are chirping. The kind of day where almost anything is possible.

I’ve been playing with some ruffles and a new pattern for a clutch. A few kinks still need to be worked out. But I like the body of these. Folded and then gathered, they don’t need a hem. And they stand up perfectly.

Since I started, I’ve received my ruffler attachment in the mail. I’ll be trying that out soon and will let you know how steep the learning curve is for an old school seamstress like myself.

In the meantime, I have fabric to launder and press. Time to get down to business. Right after I have that third cup of coffee.

Two Socks Are Better Than One

The other sock is finished. Phew! A completed project sure feels good. Have you ever realized that handwork is a good indication of how relaxed you are? The stitches are looser and the fit is better on the second sock. Apparently, I stressed out on the first sock–despite telling myself I didn’t care about the outcome. Ah, those mental tricks. They don’t always work.

I’m lucky I got anything done at all. The rain was making someone very needy. Although turning a space heater directly on him did give me a couple hours of peace.

Find time for something creative today. Maybe even finish a project. Just remember to have fun while you’re at it!

Thinking Ahead

Spring will be here soon. The time for picnics at the park or the beach. The time for heading outdoors for small adventures. It always means lugging along the necessities. What better than a large bag in a happy Sassaman print to hold towels, sunscreen, lunch and a book.

Because it is not Spring and the weather is not sunny, I cannot show you the bright and cheery bag. (Well, I could but the pictures would be anything but bright and cheery.) A sneak peek at the details will have to do for the time being.

Well…..Duh!!!

Here’s one to make you shake your head. A scientist, who is a cat owner, has done a study showing that cats manipulate their owners. She isolated the various frequencies of purrs and it turns out that humans can tell the difference between an insistent, get-out-of-bed-now purr and an I’m-happy-and-in-charge purr. Who knew!

If you want a little more info, go to Scientific American. I really think this study says more about the scientist than about cats. And speaking of cats, I’m really missing our little black Halloween cat, Edie. (The one in the photo who would not turn around for the camera–no matter what.) It just isn’t the same without her craziness and her pokey little legs. And her scarred ears. And her howling from the closet playing hide and seek. Mingi misses her too. He doesn’t have anyone to share his grumpiness and superiority. His human has been too busy sewing and crafting to pay him adequate attention and he’s plotting his revenge.
