Giveaway!

What do you say to a giveaway?  You have all been patient with my inability to show you pictures of the latest projects and the slower blogging pace of late.  To say “Thanks” and to enable you in some color craziness, I’m sharing some gorgeous fabrics from Dan Bennett’s Wild Garden collection for Westminster Fibers. They make a great supplement to any stash and have interesting design elements for fussy cutting.  A total of nine fat quarters waiting for a new home.

To enter leave a comment.  For an extra entry, blog the giveaway on your blog and come back and leave a second comment telling me you did it.  International entrants are welcome.  A winner will be selected by a random number generator.  You have until midnight November 5th (Pacific Standard Time) to enter.

Good luck!

Fun in the Sun

Today’s was an Artist Date.  If you’re familiar with Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, you know the significance of such a day.  If you’re not, let me explain.  The Artist’s Date is a time spent alone doing something interesting.  Not necessarily interesting to others.  This is about you and your journey and your creative life.

It all began in one of those fits of spontaneity which seem to bubble up out of nowhere.  But it only seems like nowhere because we aren’t attuned.  On this gloriously sunny afternoon, I listened to the voice that said “Turn right”.  And instead of following my route home, I went into the Park.  I told myself that if a parking space was readily available, I would take it and see what happened.  Not quite the way the Artist Date is supposed to work, but these are baby steps.  And lo and behold…I had my choice of three spaces.  Then it was through the Alcazar Garden and on to the Botanical Garden.

And here was my reward.  Golden slipper orchids nestled in the green tropical plants.

Pitcher plants hung suspended over a bog of carnivorous plants, all of them waiting for their next meal.

And more gorgeous orchids on the way out.

At the reflection pool a turtle was out enjoying the sunny afternoon for himself.

Before leaving I took some time at the Mingei Museum.  Many things of interest.  Many, many things of interest.  I think I’ll save that for another post.

It was a great afternoon.  Exactly the kind of day I needed after all the days spent over the sewing machine while it spat rain and stayed gloomy outside.   A day to lift your spirits and remind you of all the tiny connections you have to this life and the living things around you.

Facts From The Weekend

1)  Basic yoga poses are good for more than balance.  A solid Downward Dog is a plus when pinning a quilt sandwich that takes up every available inch of floor space with the exception of a six inch perimeter.  Garland Pose comes in handy too.

2)  Caffeine without protein will only get you so far.  Tremors do not help with seam ripping.  Counter-intuitive, I know, but there it is.

3)  Crazy Glue will seal pin pricks and keep blood of your quilt.

Yes, it has been a busy weekend with one last mad dash to get a quilt made before Market.  Fortunately, it is down to binding and a hanging sleeve.  I’m anxious to show you this one.  But first, it has to debut at Market.  And as far as I can tell, this fabric hasn’t been seen online anywhere yet either.  So hush hush.

In the meantime, do go check out Jane’s Garden Divas.  She has a great slide show of the prints here.  I love these all so much.  It’s hard for me to pick a favorite.  Dragonfly Moon is definitely one of them.  These fabrics all play well together.  In a week I’ll be able to show you a few things to inspire you.  For now, I’ll just say that this collection does not disappoint.

Things will ease up here in a couple days.  When they do, you can expect more regular posts and all the wild and crazy things you’ve come to expect around here.  Things like easy holiday projects, Mod Podge, books, food, and out of nowhere observations.

I think I’ll practice the Corpse Pose now.  I seem to be best at that one.  Have a great week!

I Do Not Have a New Sewing Machine

Not technically.  What I do have is a “Sewing Computer”.  Nowhere in the manual does it describe this little beauty as a “machine”.  And since it is an on board computer that does all these wonderful decorative stitches, “sewing computer” is appropriate.  She will always be a machine to me though.

I went first thing this morning to pick her up.  I wish I had taken my camera with me.  And not for pictures of other machines.  The shop has a cat.  What goes better with sewing machines than a cat, I ask you.  Nothing.  He’s a big orange tiger stripe cat.  And he was wearing a shirt!!!!!

See…I really did need that camera because even if you believe me, you can’t possibly imagine this cat.  A cat in a t-shirt, his arms through the arm holes and his head through the neck hole, walking around as if it were perfectly normal.  Apparently, it keeps him from licking the wounds he got on his side.  (Good thinking if you can get the cat to stay in it.  Which he does.)  Care to guess what size he wears?  Not 6 months.  Not even 12 months.  No, this King of the Shop wears nothing less than a toddler size 2T!!!  They said he was “big boned”.

Fungus Among Us

Generally speaking, October means hot days and cool nights with occasional Santa Ana winds.  Apparently, someone didn’t get that memo.  In fact it feels like they never got past April on the calendar this year–with the very few exceptions.

This week…rainy with dark gray skies.  Accidents galore on the freeways.  The smell of wood burning in a neighbor’s fireplace.  It’s bizarre.

At least something is prospering in this dark and damp.  These mushrooms have popped up in the yard since the weekend.  I keep expecting to look out the window and see hundreds of fairy rings.

Going Green

Look what came in the mail!  Chunky yarn.  So many shades of green.  I have two skeins which I am hoping is just enough to make a super easy crocheted neck warmer.  One, because I need something easy right now.  And two, because I’m afraid our weather is never going to cooperate and winter will be here all too soon.

Do you have a project waiting for a change in the weather?  Maybe more than one?

Permission Granted

Remember the fabric unlike anything in my stash?  Here it is!  What do you think?  Pretty florals, crisp polka dots, fancy stripes, a lovely paisley, even a plaid.  This is Delilah by Tanya Whelan.  You can see swatches of each fabric in the collection at her blog Grand Revival.

I know many of you will be in love with this collection.  The colors are just right–not too light or too dark.  And the difference in scale of the floral prints works very well.  I think a lot of little girls, and some big ones, are going to be wearing Delilah soon.  It’s the kind of collection that begs for eyelet, ribbon, ruffles and bows.  Start pestering your favorite shop keepers now.  It should be shipping soon.

A Stretch or Two

Last week I was presented with an opportunity to create and execute a quilt design in a limited amount of time.  Not an impossible task.  Until I sat down to think of designs for this very specific group of fabric.  These fabrics are very pretty, very feminine.  And there is nothing in my stash that resembles them.  You see where I’m going with this.

What was a straightforward project turned into a challenge that scrambled my brain.  The first design idea was rejected because it was too traditional.  (And here I was trying to put myself into these traditional shoes.  Fortunately, I didn’t have to walk far in them.)  So it was back to the drawing board.  Several ideas later, one design was chosen.

Throughout this adventure, I was reminded of two important concepts.  The first is going outside your comfort zone now and then.  It is important.  Sometimes it actually hurts.  Sometimes you are thrown up against a wall and have to figure out how to get on the other side with only the tools you carry.  We discover things about our process that we ordinarily take for granted.

The second is not losing sight of yourself.  There is a tendency to abandon, temporarily, your distinctive qualities.  It makes a certain sort of sense to assume a new mindset.  But it’s the kind of the sense that leaves only emptiness in its wake.  You miss the completeness which comes from extending yourself, your authentic self, into unfamiliar territory.

What is true in this small context of a single experience is also true in a big way throughout every part of our lives.  Learning and growing and stretching are necessary if we are to reach our potential.

Act Two

Remember the Ballerina Purple datura I was gushing about here?  My deadly beautiful and tantalizingly fragrant new plant.  I’ve discovered more to love about this one.  This is what happens after the bloom falls off.  A spiky purple center with a green collar is revealed.   Wild and wonderful.

Makes me think of Jane.  Definitely a Sassaman quality to this plant.

My Friend, Random Number Generator

Look what the Mod Podge maven, Amy of Mod Podge Rocks! is sending me.  A Mod Podge sampler set!  And Glue Dots too.  I actually won a giveaway.  Never happens to me.  Never.  So I am really happy that the giveaway I did win is something I enjoy so much.  Some of you undoubtedly think this is like adding fuel to the fire.  Not true.  Not true at all.  A gallon jug of Mod Podge…now that might be trouble.

Thank you, Amy (and Amy’s Random Number Generator)!  Go visit her and see all the craziness in Mod Podge Land.  She has a giveaway going on right now for the book Cake Pops by Bakerella.  Just read Amy’s post for today and leave a comment.

There is still much to do around here.  The sewing machine is working hard.  My brain is trying to keep up.  When the smoke clears from all the creative sparks and misfires, I’ll be back with a more cogitative post.
