A Not So Tiny Embroidery Project

Ready for a little embroidery show and tell? A couple weeks ago I started a new embroidery project. I had intended for it to be small and quick. You’ll see that I completely missed the boat on the small part. Instead of something about four inches square, I ended up with something suitable for a pillow.Embroidered floral pillow coverI used my gorgeous Anna Maria Horner embroidery threads. To begin, I simply drew the design on the fabric freehand. I wanted a folksy feel with plenty of opportunities to add french knots. Then it was simply a matter of color selection and easy stitching. I set the design in Amy Butler’s Lark fabrics. The colors go together beautifully and the new pillow matches the one I showed you in this post.Pillow with embroidery

I love the look and feel of handwork around the house. For me, it adds a layer of subtlety. Something about the quiet moments reflected in the finished project. As if an old soul lives here.

Is there any needlework in your life right now?  Any thread projects you’re dying to make? If so, I’d love to hear about them.

  1. Sooo very lovely! LOVE it with the Lark fabric too! Is it going to be a pattern? Would be a fun one!

  2. Such beautiful flowers, they have a beautiful movement about them, as though they are blowing in a gentle breeze. The Lark fabric is wonderful with your design and all together on the blue chair is a welcoming sight! My sewing machine is off to be serviced so I’ll be hand sewing for a couple of weeks. (Hey- I just looked up and Phil is sitting on the couch reading the Generation Q magazine, how cool is that !!!!!)

That is awesome! Always a treat when a non-quilter actually gets interested in our obsession. :) I still can’t believe you’ll be without your machine for that long!!! Gasp!

  3. I absolutely adore this pillow! It just brings a big smile to my face the minute I look at it. I love your embroidery and the fabric you chose to go with it. Absolutely perfect!!!

Thanks, Cindy! Generating smiles is a great thing, the right kind of indicator for a project like this.

  4. So pretty! You totally should do a pattern!

  5. Beautiful color choices! I love your embroidery, too. The flowers are smiling :)

Your work is just beautiful. The colors and what you designed make me happy just by seeing it on the web; it has to be even more powerful in person. Congratulations!

Bari J sent me. I think this would be a great pattern. I will be needing some pretty pillows soon. Very beautiful. I so agree with you on the handmade art. I have lots of handpainted owls (by a retired medical illustrator), watercolors (my fav) by quite a few artists and of course, quilts. Thank you for sharing.

Gorgeous. You did a super job. What talent you have to just draw and embroider. I follow a pattern and just finished a small red work which I am going to finish as a mug rug. It has needles, thread, pins, etc on it.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Hey!

Love this embroidery!! This must have been a lot of work. I love doing it by hand, but it never looks this good :) Of course it doesn’t help that I have a two year old contantly pulling at me and when he is asleep I am too.

    Love the blog!
