From Gray to Blue

Every year you get to here me complain about June Gloom. This year is no different. The marine layer has been very thick, meaning the clouds never burn off and no sun ever shines through along the coast. I have to make do, so I find my blue skies elsewhere. Like in this 18 inch pillow cover I finished this morning.quilted pillow cover in Amy Butler LarkThese fabrics are from Amy Butler’s Lark and Soul Blossom collections. I love them. I’m particularly fond of the River Shine graphic with all of its charcoal and ivory glory. It sets off the blues so well. These are 2 1/2″ squares, just the right size to show off the design elements in the prints. It coordinates perfectly with the quilt I did for Generation Q’s first issue.  Curious about that quilt?Love in the Afternoon Quilt by Melissa PedaThis is it! I haven’t seen my copy of the magazine yet, so I’m not sure what they had to say about it.  As soon as I know, I’ll do another post with a few more details on how this quilt went from a stack of scraps to what you see here. (The magazine has the pattern for this quilt so be sure to get your copy if you think you want to make your own version.)

  1. These are both spectacular! They go well together, but each stands on its own . Love that blue chair, too!

  2. You really pumped up the volume on the photography with this post. Both the pillow and the quilt are fantastic pieces, but the way you photographed them made them go off the charts. Both images make it impossible to imagine what “June Gloom” might be like. Both pieces make it seem like this is your favorite time of year. As always, your ability to match up different fabrics, in just the right proportions, is spot on. Awesome.

  1. [...] Ready for a little embroidery show and tell? A couple weeks ago I started a new embroidery project. I had intended for it to be small and quick. You’ll see that I completely missed the boat on the small part. Instead of something about four inches square, I ended up with something suitable for a pillow.I used my gorgeous Anna Maria Horner embroidery threads. To begin, I simply drew the design on the fabric freehand. I wanted a folksy feel with plenty of opportunities to add french knots. Then it was simply a matter of color selection and easy stitching. I set the design in Amy Butler’s Lark fabrics. The colors go together beautifully and the new pillow matches the one I showed you in this post. [...]
