I’ve been enjoying a small lull in the action. While the To Do list is still full, the manic sewing part of things is currently over. It doesn’t mean it won’t be back in full swing at the drop of a hat, but I’m trying to appreciate the space between, to be in the Now.Cats and a few guilty pleasure books have been helping me relax. If you’ve been around here long enough, you know I read a lot and that my reading covers a lot of ground. Sometimes, I give in to a series of lighthearted stories and leave the dark, hair raising ones on the shelf . Series like Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse or Terry Prachett’s Discworld. Of course, this isn’t much of a diversion from my favorite reading as it’s all still fantasy. On Friday I picked up Debora Geary’s Modern Witch.
Five books into the series and I’m hooked on this family. The ones related by blood and the ones related by heart. She weaves a story that pulls you in, not because of what’s happening to the characters but because of what’s happening between the characters. The problems of familial relationships, of the struggle to give each member the tools and opportunities to reach their potential, the pitfalls of large groups with a high preponderance of strong personalities: it’s all in there. All of it written with a great deal of love and understanding for the frailties of our nature.
I’ll be back in the salt mines soon. For now, I’m going to enjoy Witch Central.
