Happy Friday! I have a new free pattern to share with you. Remember the Anna Maria Horner bag in this post? I finished the pattern and added alternate version instructions–one for adding the zipper to the large bag and one for the smaller bag. Click here for the pdf.Want to know what I love about this bag? First, the shape and size makes it a great bag for overnight trips, retreats, you name it. It’s 18″ wide by 14″ tall by 9″ deep. Very roomy. Second, it has both handles and a shoulder strap. You can leave off the shoulder strap if you prefer. If you want to add an extra touch, use two large swivel hooks on the strap to make it detachable. And third, the zippered version is super easy to do.
The bag design includes a small D ring and swivel hook to bring in the side seams. The separating zipper only covers the area that is left exposed. You separate the zipper, after carefully marking the center on both sides of the zipper tape, and sew it between the bag exterior and lining when you sew the bag together. I didn’t even need to switch to a zipper foot to put this zipper in. The magnetic snap version uses two snaps to keep that top area closed. I used the larger magnetic snaps for this oversized bag. I generally purchase mine on Amazon in bulk because it’s much cheaper. Also a great way to buy swivel hooks and D rings. But let’s get back to the fabric in that first photo, shall we? It’s Tribal by Snow Leopard for Free Spirit. This collection is just begging for easy quilts and accessories. I used the Alexandria print in Terra for the main field and Nomad in Dynasty for the border, binding it in Jayanti in Terra. All I did for this quilt top was cut out around the shapes and raw edge appliqued the whole thing to the border. It doesn’t get much easier than that. But if you were pressed for time, you could simply sew on regular borders and not lose any of the drama. The backing is a coordinating solid and I used a loose meander to quilt it. Simple but effective and a great way to make a quick gift for someone special. And Alexandria isn’t the only print with whole cloth quilt potential. Head over to Free Spirit’s page to see all the sku’s of this vibrant collection. This collection is in shops now.
Have a colorful weekend!
