What a week! Many of you may have heard the Free Spirit news this week. (Coats made the decision to close Free Spirit and Westminster Fibers, effective this past Monday. No more printing, just selling off what’s been printed between now and May 31st.) It came as a shock to everyone and it’s been a week for wrapping heads around this new reality.
I’ve been working with Free Spirit for the last nine years–writing patterns and tutorials, copy for blog posts and sewing samples for the marketing side of things. It has been an amazing time and I am so grateful for the opportunities to work with such wonderful people. It’s just so surreal at the moment. Projects I was working on and the one that I was expecting any week are no longer happening. It’s time to clear the decks and start sailing into whatever comes next. Just before I got the news on Monday, I had placed an order with Quilt Home for some of Kathy Doughty’s Horizon. It arrived yesterday and it’s just what I need! These colors are such a fun departure from some of my usual choices. It’s the kind of change I’m eager to dive into. This is what sold me. This guy right here. I have some ideas about medallions but we’ll see what happens once I get started. I’m letting it happen as it happens.
When I told Mr P the news about Free Spirit, his first reaction was, “Does that mean they won’t be sending you any more fabric?” I don’t know if he was happy to hear that was the case. Or if he was silently calculating how much money may start leaking out of the bank account to keep me in fabric. Good thing for both of us that I have such an extensive collection. And now I have no excuses not to start sewing it up in earnest.
Have a good weekend, everyone! Thank you for being part of my journey with Free Spirit. I hope you’re ready to join me for whatever comes next.
