Happy Friday! This week did not go as planned, but happily I still have something to share with you. This is the fifth practice quilt to come off the frame. (Isn’t it a good thing I had that stack of quilt tops waiting?)I used Joel Dewberry’s Atrium collection to make this crib sized quilt. If I hadn’t endured a migraine this week, I had planned to have a project sheet for you. But my brain was busy malfunctioning, so I’ll just give you a quick run down on how to make this. It’s so easy, a pattern isn’t even necessary.
Here’s what you need for this 44″ x 56″ quilt top:
- 63 – 4 1/2″ squares
- 10 – 2 1/2″ x 44″ strips
- 72 – 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles
- Backing (at least 1 1/3 yds. extra wide backing)
- Batting (crib or twin size)
- Binding (1/3 yd. to yield 5 – 2″ x WOF strips for double fold binding)
Make each row by sewing together 7 squares and 8 of the 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. Make nine rows. Sew the 2 1/2″ x 44″ strips to the top and bottom of each row to complete the quilt top. It’s that simple.
I used Tula Pink’s Free Fall for Free Spirit for the backing. It measures 108″ wide and is so soft and smooth. The gray and the circles seemed like the perfect complement for this quilt top of colorful squares.
There were no tension issues with this quilt. (Yay!) I used Superior Threads Masterpiece. I was a little nervous to quilt this one for two reasons. One, the backing is different from the regular quilting cotton. Two, the solid in this quilt is not Free Spirit. I had a jelly roll of Moda Bella Solids in white which made the assembly process even easier. However, the texture, hand and weave are all unlike Free Spirit’s. The needle holes could be seen more easily. Since it was not pre-washed, I crossed my fingers and hoped the slight shrinkage would take care of it. It worked, but it’s something worth remembering.A scrappy binding finished it off. Optimistic colors for the Spring days ahead.
If you responded to the last post and haven’t heard back from me yet, I haven’t forgotten you. I just need to get my brain in gear for communicating. With another storm on the way in, I better make it quick before the next change-of-weather migraine hits.
Have a Happy Friday and enjoy your weekend!
