The Common Bat is much maligned. True, he has a slightly creepy visage, an odd arrangement of limbs and wings and claws and toes. His furry face seems at odds with his leathery wings. But it isn’t his fault he became a hook for our projections. Our fears of Darkness and Evil drape so easily about his slight form.
Yet it would be difficult to imagine our ecosystem without him in the food chain. Every night he eats at least half his weight in bugs. Imagine how quickly we would be overrun without him. He goes so quietly about his business we rarely notice or stop to thank him. And all the thousands of his family.
There is a scary part to his story–fungus. Hopefully, we will soon understand more about the white nose fungus and be able to stop the damage.
